There is no consensus as to what a smartphone actually is, and because of that, it is becoming increasingly difficult for consumer to distinguish between what they perceived as general multifunctioned phones and a full fledged smartphone. So, how do we as a consumer manage to identified all that.
In this article, I will provide a few different aspect for all readers to make comparison. There are five significant mobile operating systems in use today, which are SYMBIAN, LINUX, WINDOWS MOBILE, RIM BLACKBERRY, THE UBIQUITOUS PALM OS,and OSX of Apple iPhone.
WINDOWS MOBILE
It's a brand name that came from Microsoft, better known as Windows Mobile (WM). Windows Mobile usually were designed to mirror the look and feel of desktop operating system and it is easy to use especially for PC users. There's a lot of big company that already employ windows mobile into their products, like Samsung, HTC, Motorolla and LG.
The latest version of WM is Windows Mobile 6 Professional. It is much more advanced compared to their standard edition which is lack of touchscreen ability. WM becomes an enterprise tools because of their compatibility with Windows and it's popular software Microsoft Office suite of programmes.
It is become the first choice for consumer who need their emails and office files on the move with the highest level formatting. WM also support lot of third party software and it is the main reason consumer started to shifting their interest towards Symbian. It also being said that their worse part is WM is relatively unstable.
As a conclusion, even though WM is a user friendly, better be prepared to lower down your grade on phone features. The main focused on WM is organiser then came phone feature in second.
SYMBIAN
Symbian is the result of collaborative between Nokia, Sony Ericsson,Ericsson, Panasonic, Siemens AG and Samsung that promises of power efficiency. It easy to imagine that Symbian much likely an open source. There is no similarity between all Symbian in Nokia, Sony Ericsson and others. And why is that? It is because all of these big name in the alliance can choose to altered anything that suit them.
For Nokia itself, after making a lot of investment in developing, they manage to be on top.
For consumers, going symbian mean access to widest selection of software in expanding the functionality of their device. Symbian device are typically designed to be user friendly and offered by similar manufacturers.
The main key features for Symbian known as powerfull multimedia and also camera offerings. The strength, it is widely available and attractive consumer designs.
MOBILE OSX
This operating system (OS X) is not designed to be a smartphone by definition. Mobile OS X runs remarkably well on the consumer level, it has unique touchscreen and sleek design plus the platform serves well as a multimedia device.
Mobile OS X being created to be an Internet enabled multimedia device, not to mention their sofistication feature.
Seems like OS X is a perfect product. Trully is, there is also limitation to Mobile OS X. One of the problem is if you're currently using Windows operating system. There is also lack of support for third party software (not including legal software). But as usual, after a few firmware update been released it promised much more additional functionality. Their latest product on the market is using Firmware 2.0.2. (iPhone 3G).
RIM BLACKBERRY
It is of course the first chice for corporate use. They do have specific design and function, best on their own class. As a smartphone, a blackberry ticks most of the required check boxes. Their platform also not as robust as Symbian and focused on specific targeted consumers. The key feature of Blackberry is their ease of use for email composition and retrieval. Therefore, various manufacturers such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson and HTC employ the use of the Blackberry email client to facilitate push-email. Even though it is full of great things about Blackberry, it's still lack of high speed data device.
LINUX
The last OS is Linux Mobile platform. Lately, linux becoming rapidly growing competitor to Symbian. Therefore, to control endless variations of the platform, the Linux Mobile Foundation was established between Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic, Samsung and Vodafone to co-develop a linux based operating system.
The main key features of linux based platform is their own unique platform design but have weak in offering, low mass market appeal.
